Despite a scammer's best efforts, these simple steps can stand in their way – and preserve the security of the information you store and access online.
- Keep your passwords and One Time Password (OTP) private
- Enable 2FA for an added layer of security. This typically involves receiving a code on your phone that you must enter after entering your password.
- Don't share passwords and OTP
- Use unique passwords
- Don’t reuse passwords, especially the one for banking
- Change passwords frequently
- Do not use all or part of your Social Security number, date of birth, street address, etc., when creating PINs or passwords
- Do not use easily guessable information such as your name, birthdate, or common words.
- Never share your password via email or over the phone. Banks will never ask for your password through these channels.
- Regularly check your bank statements and online banking activity for any unauthorized transactions.
